This is a downtown review — not the wider Orlando city score. I like living in the Orlando area. Disney, Universal, I-Drive, Lake Nona, the parks — the city has a ton going on. Downtown Orlando is a different animal, and on this Saturday it was one of the worst big-city cores I have walked in a while.
I got invited as a creator to an Orlando City match (Avianca partnership night — full experience review here) and came downtown two or three hours early — around 2:00 p.m. on the first Saturday of college football — planning to find a sports bar, watch games, and chill before kickoff. That plan died fast.
Energy: 2.5. Downtown felt dead. I walked for a good hour to an hour and a half through the Church Street / Wall Street stretch and the wider core. By 4:30 — with Disney on Ice at Kia Center and a big soccer night on the calendar — there still was not anybody downtown. For a weekend afternoon in a major Florida city, that is shocking.
Options: 2.0. I found zero sports bars open. A couple dive bars. That was it. I came specifically for a sports-bar afternoon and ended up buying a Red Bull at Publix and sitting in the car for thirty minutes waiting on the game. When we first moved here, downtown felt more alive — places like Hairy Buffalo, Ferg’s, a soccer bar, something on the board. A lot of that energy is gone.
Cleanliness: 2.5. Boarded storefronts. Closed-down blocks. Heavy homeless presence. Smelled like pee in stretches. It felt trashy and neglected — not “urban grit with character,” just sad. There are signs about renovations and big changes coming. I will believe that when I see it.
Atmosphere: 3.2. Lake Eola looked like it had a little more traffic and people — a couple bars that way — but I did not end up over there. The core I walked was not a place you want to linger. Part of the problem is structural: Orlando’s gravity sits on Disney, Universal, I-Drive, and the tourist corridors. Nobody prioritizes downtown, and it shows. That is overlooked if you want a real city center — and I am not sure renovation posters alone fix a demand problem this big.
Knup 3.4 / 10. One of the weakest big-city downtown experiences I have had. Separate from how I feel about Orlando as a city — that page has its own score. This is the core, on a Saturday that should have been busy, and it was not.

Afternoon · pre–Orlando City / Avianca · Came downtown ~2–3 hours early for an Avianca creator invite to Orlando City vs San Diego at Inter&Co. First Saturday of college football. Walked Church Street / Wall Street area ~60–90 min. Zero sports bars open; a couple dive bars. Bought Red Bull at Publix and sat in the car. Lake Eola side looked busier — did not go over.
