On Monday night, the Oklahoma City Thunder continued their impressive start to the season with a solid win over the Phoenix Suns. The Thunder took control at Paycom Center, finishing with a 125–114 victory. This game saw OKC extend their record to 4-0, while the Suns fell to 1-2 in the early going.
The first quarter saw Oklahoma City set the pace with a 33-27 lead. Ajay Mitchell proved to be a crucial figure with his shooting efficiency. His 10-of-16 performance on field goals made a significant impact on the Thunder’s offensive rhythm.
Thunder Take Control
The Thunder maintained their momentum into the second quarter, outscoring the Suns 34-26. With Shai Gilgeous-Alexander adding 26 points, the home team continued to press their advantage. Isaiah Hartenstein contributed with both scoring and rebounding, securing 15 points and 13 rebounds.
Despite the Suns' efforts, they struggled to break through OKC's defense. The Thunder's field goal percentage of 51.2% was markedly better than Phoenix’s 42.9%. This efficiency allowed the Thunder to keep their lead intact through the game.
The third quarter saw both teams scoring 32 points each, but the Suns could not close the gap. Jalen Green led Phoenix with 20 points, trying to rally his team. However, turnovers haunted the Suns, as they recorded 12 compared to the Thunder's 16.
Closing Out the Victory
In the final quarter, the Suns attempted a comeback with 29 points. Miles Bridges delivered 17 points and 8 rebounds, contributing to the effort. Yet, the Thunder's earlier work had created too much of a cushion.
As the game concluded, the Thunder had successfully fended off any late surge from Phoenix. Their free throw accuracy also stood out, converting 25 of 29 attempts for 86.2%. This was crucial in maintaining their lead.
For Phoenix, Dillon Brooks added 19 points, 5 rebounds, and 5 assists. His all-around play was notable, but it wasn’t enough to lift the Suns past their opponents. The Suns’ 3-point shooting, at 36%, was another area that needed improvement.
Looking Ahead
Oklahoma City now prepares for their next challenge, a road game against the Dallas Mavericks on October 28. They will look to extend their winning streak and build on their strong start. This win gives them a good footing as they aim for the top spot in the Western Conference.
Phoenix will return home to face the Denver Nuggets on October 30. Head Coach Jordan Ott will aim to regroup his team and address the areas of concern. The Suns will need to tighten their defense and improve their shooting consistency.
With the Western Conference heating up, both teams will seek to capitalize on their upcoming schedules. Each game carries weight in this competitive early season landscape. Fans can expect more intense contests as the season progresses.
